The History of Malibu® Boats
There’s nothing like spending time on the water to make the most of a beautiful day, and no boat makes it more worthwhile than a Malibu® model. We here at Shoreline Boat Center are proud to be your local Malibu dealership in Green Lake, Wisconsin, and wanted to share some of this company’s history with you. Foundation
Created by Bob Alkema and Steve Marshall in Merced, California in 1982, Malibu was built to cater to coastal city residents who spend most of their time on the water. They saw an open market for building powerful, rugged boats that made water sports all the more fun, and named the company after the city of Malibu to reflect their dedication. In their first year or so, they built only two boats a week, but by 1988 Alkema and Marshall’s company had a 9% share of the entire industry.
Relocation
To meet their needs as a growing company, Malibu moved to a production facility in Loudon, Tennessee, which is still their headquarters today. They made waves in the boating industry to match the wakes their tow boats created and are now one of the top boat manufacturers world-wide. With the increasing popularity of water sports like wakeboarding and wakesurfing, Malibu has remained a dominant force in the boating market.
