Even the most seasoned sailor can still suffer the marine motion-sickness malady known as “seasickness.” An imbalance in your inner ear based on the sensory feedback you receive is the culprit, since the rocking motion of the boat and the water can really confuse your brain. This in turn causes symptoms like weakness, vertigo, and nausea, all of which can absolutely ruin what would otherwise be a fun boating experience. Here are some strategies that will help curb the effects of seasickness so that everyone can enjoy the trip.

Stay Sober

You already know that alcohol can cause you to feel dehydrated and nauseated, especially if you have too much of it. Even moderate drinking before a voyage can contribute to seasickness, though. It’s best to avoid alcohol a day or two before you board a boat and to stick to water or herbal tea when you’re on board.

Eat Lightly

While you may not feel like eating anything at all when you’re nauseated, a little food can help cut down acid and make you feel better. Keep saltine crackers, granola, trail mix, applesauce, bananas, and other gentle foods on hand that people can snack on to avoid feeling ill.

Try Herbal Cures

Both ginger and peppermint are renowned for their ability to help quell nausea. Having some candies or tea in these flavors can help you to feel better. Even just the scent of them can help!
