If you’re in the market for a high-quality used boat, we encourage you to visit our location in Green Lake, Wisconsin. However, before you visit be sure to read our helpful inspection tips below!

Exterior

To begin your inspection, be sure to give your boat’s exterior a solid once over. While some issues may simply be quick cosmetic fixes, they could also be signs of larger issues or a lack of care by previous owners. Start by checking for corrosion or rust on all metal surfaces. If your ship is painted, keep an eye out for blistering at the waterline, as it’s a sign that corrosion will appear shortly. If there are any wood surfaces on your ship, check to be sure there are no cracks above 2 inches.

Interior

Another sign that a boat has not been well cared for is the appearance of mildew or mold in the boat’s interior. Before you take your ship off the lot, be sure to check its seats and flooring for any sign of rot or mold. While these are the most common areas in which mildew will appear, we advise giving the entire interior a thorough inspection. If you see any rust on some of your boat’s metal implements, this is another sign the ship hasn’t been very well cared for.

Oil

Engine repairs are a costly expense that you want to avoid at all costs. Before selecting your used boat be sure to check the engine oil. Start by checking the color of the oil. If it appears milky it’s a sign water has gotten into the engine and you’re about to be saddled with an expensive repair. You’ll also want to rub the oil between your fingers to check for grit. These are often metal shavings that have fallen in from the boat engine and are a clear sign that the motor is about to fall apart.
